"A man walks across the suspension bridge in Ithaca, NY at Cornell University on May 30, 2010. Ever since the recent suicides this past semester, the Cornell University has installed chain link fences equipped with barbed wire to prevent more deaths."
I went to Cornell a few weeks ago for my sister's graduation. I had read earlier in the year about the deaths from students jumping off the suspension bridge into the gorges.
Now when I say gorge, I don't mean a small gorge, these things are huge!
Literally walking across the bridge and looking down was scary. I almost wondered why they didn't have these fences earlier.
So interesting!! Do you know the Golden Gate Bridge in SF, CA is the #1 suicide spot in the WORLD? There are some 30 suicides a year from people jumping to their deaths. I saw an interesting yet haunting documentary a couple of weeks ago called "The Bridge" (2006) that narrated the story of ~11 people who jumped from the Golden Gate in 2004. The director of the documentary had cameras rolling on the bridge every day for an entire year, actually CAPTURING a few of the deaths. They even interviewed family and friends of some of the people they caught jumping, after the fact. The point of the film was to raise awareness about how easy it is for people to climb over the 4foot fence and commit suicide. There is a big debate about building a safety net, kind of like the one in Ithaca. Many say its a waste of tax payers money, since people who want to commit suicide will just find another means of doing it. They also believe the safety net will be an eyesore. I think they finally got the state's approval to build the net in 2009, although construction has yet to begin. IMO I think its better to be safe than sorry!

Very scary in dead, the black and white images with the high contrast truly exemplifies your point. Very nice image.
